...See more Hello everyone, welcome to this month's check-in! This month is Universal Human Rights Month 2024. (Source [https://www.cheservices.com/blog/universal-human-rights-month]) In December 1948 the UN declared the basic rights and universal freedoms, known as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Today, we want to celebrate stories of people who fought for their and our rights and be grateful for their wins while not forgetting that the fight for freedom and equality isn't over.  So, if you want to, revisit the Universal Declaration of Human Rights [https://www.un.org/en/about-us/universal-declaration-of-human-rights] and share a story with us in which you've stood up for your own rights. I'm sure that a lot of people in this community have had their own fights for their freedom and equal chances in life so let's celebrate our wins together. ------------------------- Trauma Support Community Check-In for December 2024 1) Which place gives you a feeling of safety and calm? 2) How do you think trauma has influenced the way you are aware of people's rights and freedoms? 3) What do you think helps to make a space safe and welcoming for everyone? ------------------------- If you have a question you'd like me to ask at the next check-in, please let me know! The empty barrel (Diary(

...See more I wake up every morning and do my morning things. Brush my teeth, shower, make my bed, eat breakfast and move on with my day. Or at least, the day of the body I inhabit. The body that was once mine. The body that is now nothing but an empty barrel, a tragic reminder of the girl I used to be. Every other day, I try to convince myself that it wasn't what it is. RAPE!. I try to erase the past and grow up fast. To kill all the pain and choose a different lane. Fighting to live another day, spreading my wings and reaching for the sky. But I'm forever confined by the chains of the past. All the people in my life blame me for every wrong step I take. If only they would guide me so I wouldn't fall again. I roan your streets desperate to find a way out of this misery. Desperate for fresh air, for a saviour, for a hand to hold. But happiness never once came knocking at my door. I said maybe I should paint my wrist red and take a nap forever, but I couldn't because then momma would be sad. She'd break if she ever lost her little princess. The same little princess she doesn't know she'd already lost. My abusers are now six feet under, but does it even matter at this point? At least they got to live until they were old and gray. My life on the other hand, started when I was zero and ended when I was nine. Now I'm 17. I'm nothing but an empty barrel. Needed a space to bleed for a few minutes :)
why do i keep thinking about my father figure? i feel like i rely on him for everything in my life

...See more so recently i just got casted into this show, and one of the cast members really stands out to me. he knows that i see him as a father figure, and hugs me a lot at rehearsals. however, when i’m not at rehearsals, all i can ever do is think about him. my dad was not the ideal father that you would want in your life. he cheated on my mom with her best friend, proceeded to have my mom’s ex best friend move in, all while trying to lie to me and tell me that they were both just “really good friends” i never believed him and i was yelled at a lot during that time. i’ve never trusted him since. i really feel like i might be extremely emotionally connected to my father figure, but i can’t really put my finger on why he’s on my mind 24/7.

I would just like to validate myself

...See more Hello, everyone. How are you all? I just want to drop by to open up. I am officially diagnosed with Bipolar 2 Disorder with Rapid Cycling. Ever since this developed, my life never felt the same again. Now, I just wanna say that I am not sure how long my energy can keep up with life's demands, especially in the family department. I already found to the confidence to overcome it. I'd like to assure I got no plans to do anything bad because I know life can still be worth the shot It's just... All the energy I am supposed to be putting on my passions and goals, my growth, are being used up by dealing with people in my life who I thought and claimed themselves would care for me. It just hurts that most of my family and friends were here for me when I am only at my best. But I almost cannot find them or get them to listen well when I am at my worst. They always accuse me of gaslighting when I challenge their overwhelming, negative thinking. And people often find problems repuslsive when I almost ended up repressing myself for anothwr decade again. It just... Ruins my progress with my self-esteem. It's like it all only works out with them all at first, but then they all give up and break their promised convictions halfway when things get wuite messy. I feel and notice my efforts to stay well are futile and invalidated. It hurts because I do them when no one was looking. I thought to myself "Why do I have to always prove myself? Ain't? Many of the sincerest actions done without audience to praise or applaud me?" Yet they also grab the chance to run to me when they need my support. it hurts because I do support them and, being a Christian, do my best to follow the principle of not asking anything in return. But... Why does it have to come to a point were it all feels one-sided. I feel like I am wasting my current friends' effort to appreciate and support me. I mean, they of course are not always available as they have their own lives too. As much as I want to run to them, I cannot take too much of their time. I know they want to, too. But live can get in their way, too. I just wanted to be myself. I just wanted to be well and better. It is not easy to eat healthy everyday with ample amount of cash that often go to basic needs, therapy and medication in this third-world economy. It is not easy to stick to a field I know I can excel in the most knowing not everyone understamd its nature well and most will usually just stick with heavy-laden, mind-effing jobs to make ends meet. It is not easy to always push myself to move and take action when I know I am tired because I got not other choice most of the time. It is not easy to to assert when I know people would again lash out at me as a result despite them overstepping and violating my boundaries repetitively no matter how much I try to communicate about it. It is not easy that I do things alone most of the time because I tend to get most of my important things better rhat way. Sometimes this makes me feel isolated because people did not get to witness how much I had to do for myself. It is not easy to rely momentarily on people I know hurt me lots of times before while I work my way, blood, sweat and tears to find a better job that I would enjoy the most after settling for less just to survive. And a lot more. I am just so tired. I am sick of tired of emotionally unavailable family members and friends who I trusted but got rejected by. I don't want to give up, but my mind kept telling me "no more". It is begging me to rest. Yet life won't let me with its constant demands and challenges. i just need people by my side who will not judge me for what I am going through and invalidate my cries. I just need someone who will respect and believe me that I know what is right for me while most of my clan micromanage me. I just need honest people who can tell me ahead of time if they can handle my burdens when they start hearing it instead of running for the hills halfway upon hearing it because, it turns out, they may have struggled to gaugw themselves if they really can handle the reality and emotions of it. I wanna be free from this dysfunctional place if no one can help me and not have the temptation to dislike my condition anymore. I regret staying with them. I don't hate them. I just want a new place for myself so I can heal from all this and never have to experience resentment ever again. For my health. For my dreams. For my Higher Power. I just wanna feel true joy again.

...See more Grounding Techniques Grounding helps reconnect you with the present moment and your surroundings: 5-4-3-2-1 Grounding Method: Identify 5 things you can see. Name 4 things you can touch. Recognize 3 things you can hear. Notice 2 things you can smell. Identify 1 thing you can taste. Hold an Object: Find a textured object (like a stone or piece of fabric) and focus on how it feels in your hand. 2. Sensory Stimulation Engage your senses to stay present: Cold Sensations: Hold an ice cube or splash cold water on your face to bring yourself back to the moment. Smell or Taste: Use essential oils or chew mint gum to stimulate your sense of smell and taste. 3. Physical Movement Grounding Walk: Pay attention to each step, noticing the pressure and movement of your feet. Butterfly Hug: Cross your arms over your chest and gently tap your shoulders alternately, creating a comforting rhythm. 4. Breathing Exercises Deep breathing can reduce anxiety and prevent further dissociation: 4-7-8 Breathing: Inhale for 4 counts. Hold your breath for 7 counts. Exhale slowly for 8 counts. Box Breathing: Breathe in for 4 counts, hold for 4 counts, breathe out for 4 counts, hold again for 4 counts. 5. Engage with Your Environment Describe Your Surroundings: Out loud or in your head, describe your environment in detail to anchor yourself. List Colors or Objects: Find and name all the objects of a certain color in the room. 6. Mindfulness Practices Focus on the Present Moment: Use guided meditation apps to practice being in the here and now. Body Scan: Mentally scan your body from head to toe, noticing any sensations. 7. Journaling Grounding Journal: Write about what you see, hear, and feel in the present moment. This reinforces your connection to reality. 8. Connect with Someone Talk to a Trusted Person: A quick conversation can ground you and remind you of your current reality. 9. Safe Place Visualization Imagine a Safe Space: Visualize a place where you feel calm and secure. Use all your senses to build the mental image. 10. Create a "Grounding Kit" Include small objects, snacks, or sensory items (like stress balls) that help you feel anchored. Remember: Dissociation is your mind’s way of coping with overwhelming experiences. These strategies can help, but consistent support from a trauma-informed professional is often essential for long-term healing.

...See more I thought about starting a diary place to share and reflect on my feelings. I am trying to navigate through schizophrenia and ptsd and trying to not let it define me. I hope writing about it is productive for me. Any replies are welcome!!
Authentic Communication with Parts

...See more I was having some self reflection time this afternoon and listened to a few podcasts on trauma. I heard Gabor Maté say that ‘giving up authenticity in favour of attachment’ is a common trauma pattern. We all have 2 fundamental needs, authenticity (to accept ourselves and be accepted by others) and attachment. Attachment in early years is vital for survival. When bad experiences happen to us that cause us to override our gut feelings in order to stay attached to our caregivers, this is an example of attachment over authenticity. I recently went through some difficult experiences and noticed that many ‘friends’ weren’t there for me when I needed help. Increasingly I was having to ‘not be me’ to fit in so I left. But then it occurred to me that there are parts inside who have this same dilemma. So how can we authentically connect to our inner world/our parts after trauma? In DID open chat we often talk about our child parts needing/wanting attachment from others. Sometimes it can lead to difficult boundaries or feel embarrassing to older parts or those of us with a more avoidant attachment style. We always encourage child parts to connect to the adult parts because those parts will always be there for them. But what if they aren’t? Often old trauma patterns mean that we continue ‘give up’ our authenticity to ‘fit it’. I know for myself, making everyone else ok (externally) meant we were safer, so it was a logical defence strategy. But as we get older the cost of giving up our true selves is too great and can lead to addiction, chronic illness & disconnection from those authentic parts of ourselves that we say no to. We see this conflict play out in our internal world all the time. Some parts are angry at the injustices that happen to us (and rightly so). Then the protective parts come in to quieten things down to appease the outside and keep us externally connected. But some of our parts on the inside can feel that we have left them behind or exiled them in favour of outside connection. In our system they looked outside for connection because us inside adults taught them that’s what was important. How do we authentically connect to, and have safe attachments with our parts? We need to find out at what point were they taught to ignore their gut feelings. Us externally focused daily life parts need to sit with those needs and feelings that we have ignored and accept them. Work out what is needed, and make sure we accept the need. Then we need to negotiate how to meet the need without saying no to ourselves, and move to a healthier ‘yes’. Gabor Maté recently wrote a book called the Myth of Normal. In it he gives us 6 questions to work out where we got disconnected: - Where in your life to you have difficulty saying no? - What was the impact on you not saying no? (shame, loss of control - main trigger for stress). - What is the belief that keeps you from saying no? (It will probably show up as a story.) - How did you develop that story? Where or from whom did you learn that? - Who would you be if you didn’t believe that you must not say no? - What are you not saying yes to? Our parts often hold the memories that link to those beliefs, so we need them to help us with the missing pieces of the puzzle. By working through the questions together and making ‘internal enquiries’, we can begin to authentically connect. With connection comes an understanding of what was ours (the no’s we didn’t speak) and what was other peoples (the stories they told us). Lastly I leave you with a little poem: The body The body keeps the score, Yes, I’ve heard this before, It’s not just the score it keeps, But all the times we didn’t weep. It tells the story of the pain, The times we suppressed the shame, It holds all the no’s we shout, The ones that didn’t come out. The body kept us alive, It’s helps us to survive, It’s brilliant and ashamed, We disconnect it from our name. Pretend like it’s not there, Don’t give it any care, If it’s not really mine, I won’t let out a whine. But it is mine and it’s there, No matter how hard I stare, The mirror doesn’t become my friend, But body is still mine in the end. Cupsgiving 2024 - 3 Good Things of the Day

...See more Hello everyone, To celebrate Cupsgiving with you, here in the trauma support community, I want to invite you today to do an exercise with me around the topic of “Thankful Hearts”. Too often, we tend to focus on everything that is an issue and not good at the moment as this is what we’re working on. This can lead to us feeling like everything in our world is going wrong and that there’s nothing good left in it. The following exercise can help to shift our view to actually see all the good in our life. Maybe it’s small things like a warm coffee, some sunlight, or just surviving, but sometimes we realise that there are also big good things in our life like meeting a friend, getting a kind message or being able to go on a walk.  To do this exercise, write down 3 good things about that day everyday. Maybe make a list with all the days of the month and add the 3 good things to it every day. Or use some kind of app - there are so many free journaling and gratitude apps out there, you’ll definitely find one that fits your needs. And then, observe how you recognise more and more positive things in your days. And it’s also okay when it’s hard to find the good things sometimes. Just celebrate when you can find them and write them down.  So, let’s start this exercise today: What are your 3 good things of today? I hope you have an amazing day. Community Guidelines

These are the Trauma Support Sub-Community Guidelines, which have been drawn up in addition to the 7 Cups main guidelines and are specific for the Trauma Support community:

  • Uphold and comply with the 7 Cups main guidelines
  • Respect everyone, members and listeners alike
  • Do not discourage/be unsupportive/blame/judge one another for their past
  • No graphic, in depth descriptions or pictures which could be triggering for others - in forums, chat and support session
  • Please always add a trigger warning if you believe your thread could be potentially triggering/harmful and/or contains one of the topics on this list. Also, please add a short topic description to the trigger warning (e.g. "Trigger Warning: Domestic Abuse) and if you're in a group support chat, wait a moment to see if everyone is comfortable with the topic. If not, agree on a time span during which the person who's not comfortable with the topic leaves the chat. Once they come back after this time span, change the topic.
  • Cursing not permitted and must be asterisked. (It is fine to vent and to express appropriate anger, but as curse words have often been used during abusive and traumatic experiences, we ask members and listeners to asterisk abusive/curse words to avoid triggering and upsetting members where possible and to maintain a respectful environment and to encourage positive and healthy expression of anger.)
  • Forums postings made by listeners and members should be transparent, made in English and should not be blocked out using colouring to disguise content of wording/messages sent between members/listeners, to maintain the safety of all users of the trauma sub community and to ensure all rules are being complied with.
  • Everyone is unique and their experiences are individual to them. Everyone’s experiences and how they think and feel about these are valid. Everyone reacts to traumatic experiences differently. This will be respected and appreciated without judgement.
