Lent 2019

Lent is right around the corner, beginning with Ash Wednesday on March 6. This season is a time to focus on growing in faith. We are offering many worship, small group, and service opportunities this year for just that.

Worship Opportunities
This year’s special Lenten services will be shared with Burr Ridge United Church of Christ and Highlands Presbyterian Church.

 Joint Ash Wednesday Service
March 6 at 7pm, at Burr Ridge UCC, at the corner of Plainfield & County Line Road. I will preach.

Sermon Series: Conflict on the Journey
March 10 – April 14, Sundays at 10:30am
See our Worship Schedule post.

In Lent, we follow Jesus on his journey to the cross. On that journey, he stirred up a whole lot of conflict with his followers, organized religion, and society in general. Otherwise, his journey wouldn’t have ended on the cross!

This Lent we’ll explore some of the conflicts faced by Jesus’ earliest followers, as found in the gospel of Matthew. How did they listen for God’s voice? What values did Jesus teach in difficult times? As a community following Jesus today, how will we handle the conflicts all around us today? What values will guide us?

Maundy Thursday Communion Service
April 18 at 7pm, here at Lyonsville in the chapel.
Rev. Tim Rhodes (Interim Pastor of Burr Ridge UCC) will preach.

Good Friday Tenebrae Service
April 19 at 7pm, at Highlands Presbyterian Church, 1902 W 59th St., La Grange (across from Highlands Middle School).
Rev. Dr. John Kay (Interim Pastor of Highlands) will preach.

Small Group Opportunities

Spirituality 101
Wednesdays at 7pm, from March 13 – April 10.
Indian Head Park Library/Heritage Center, 6250 Wolf Road.

What is prayer, really, and how can we grow in our faith through prayer? Join Lyonsville, Burr Ridge UCC, and Highlands Presbyterian for this joint study, held in the historic Indian Head Park Heritage Center.

Upcoming Events

Below is a list of some upcoming events that we will be hosting or participating in. We would love to have you join us!

For details about any of these events, contact the church office.

Starting September 9, we are trying a new worship time of 10:30, with an integenerational learning time at 9:30.

Our February mission project will be to collect school supplies for The LeaderShop.  They are in need of wide ruled notebooks, packages of loose leaf paper, dual pocket folders (sturdy), school glue (stick or bottled), binders, pencils, pens (black, blue, red) and scissors.  These supplies will help them replenish the supplies they collected prior to the opening of school.

Pop tabs for the Ronald McDonald House
We are collecting pop tabs to take to the Ronald McDonald House.  We will have a collection container located in the fellowship hall. If you have any questions please see Cindi Fiandaca.

Box Tops for Education
We are also collecting Box Tops for Education to give to Byrne School.  Collecting Box Tops is an easy way for schools to earn cash.  It’s easy to find Box Tops (a list will be by the collection box). In fact, you may have some in your home right now.  All you have to do is clip the Box Tops from your favorite products and put them in the collection container located in the fellowship hall.  If you have any questions please see a member of the Mission Board.

CHURCH WOMEN UNITED
Community Nurse Collection
New onesies, new receiving blankets, baby hats, bandages designed for children, and small, soft animals (e.g. Beanie Babies) are being collected.
Please bring donations to church.

Summer Worship

Worship & Spiritual Growth Board has decided to hold worship downstairs June 3 – September 2, so we can have a comfortable and consistent worship space in the summer, as well as have the freedom to explore different styles of worship. The Church isn’t the sanctuary. The church is the people – and we look forward to being gathered for worship this summer.
